Save the Children works with Plunket and Barnardos to help children after Christchurch earthquake

*29 March 2011* Save the Children is providing specialised training for Plunket and Barnardos staff to help children and their families affected by the Christchurch earthquake. Save the Children is the world’s largest independent organisation for children operating programmes in more than 120 countries including New Zealand. The organisation has been working in Christchurch to assess how best to help children and their families following the 22 February earthquake.

$51,000 presented to Plunket for Christchurch Plunket kids

*23 March 2011* All Blacks sponsor, Sealegs, presented Plunket with a cheque for $51,000 today to help re-establish services in Christchurch. Auckland based amphibious boat manufacturer Sealegs International raised the money at a prestigious charity auction in Paris earlier this month, donating the net proceeds from a limited edition “All Blacks” Sealegs 7. 1 metre amphibious boat at an auction of luxury products.

Plunket welcomes report into the care of under-two’s

Plunket services to be provided on marae for the first time

*9 March 2011* Plunket is partnering with Manukau Urban Māori Authority (MUMA) to deliver services on marae for the first time. A Plunket mobile bus will provide Well child Services at Nga Whare Waatea from 11 March, beginning with a powhiri at 9am. Zoe Tipa (nō Ngāi Tahu) Plunket Clinical Leader in Counties Manukau says that working together with MUMA is exciting and will achieve better outcomes for Māori.

Plunket urges vigilance about child safety following earthquake

*8 March 2011* Plunket is urging parents and caregivers to be vigilant about child safety following the Christchurch earthquake. Sue Campbell, Plunket’s National Child Safety Advisor says that with many families staying in unfamiliar surroundings, parents and caregivers need to be alert to possible dangers. “Children need to be well supervised when using chemical toilets and portaloos and any chemicals need to be stored well out of their reach.

Plunket services in demand as thousands flee Christchurch

*3 March 2011* Plunket centres around the South Island have noticed an increase in demand for services as displaced parents and children flee Christchurch. Timaru’s Mayor has said that between 6,000 and 7,000 Christchurch people were now in the district – almost 20 per cent of the population. Agencies in Nelson, Marlborough, Otago and Southland have also reported population increases, resulting in an increased demand for a number of services.

Dunedin Plunket offering parents and caregivers support

*2 March 2011* The Dunedin Plunket Family Centre is offering parenting information and support to families and whānau with babies and toddlers displaced after the Christchurch earthquake. The centre also has breastpumps and a small range of clothing available. Although it is preferable for people to book so waiting times can be managed, the centre doors are open for those who turn up without an appointment.
