Safer journeys strategy

As part of its Safer Journeys' ten-year road safety strategy, the Government is considering making booster seats compulsory by law, for children until they reach the age of ten.

Plunket's national child safety adviser Sue Campbell welcomes the move, and says she was pleased to read the extent of what was laid out in the strategy.

Sue says considerable numbers of parents do not use booster seats for their children after the age of five, so anything that will make travel safer for them has to be a good thing.

"What we really want to stop seeing is 5-year-olds just using vehicle safety belt as they are susceptible to being ejected out of vehicles in some crashes, or receiving horrific internal injuries from incorrectly positioned belts."

“The strategy is a great step, and we look forward to it moving forward in the near future.”
