Māori caucus

The seven Māori Caucus members are part of the New Zealand Council.

Representing Māori throughout New Zealand, the role of the Caucus is to make sure that local Māori community health needs are addressed.

  • Jeanette Nathan

    Te Tai Tokerau

    In 2004, Jeanette returned to Aotearoa to be with whānau, after living in Australia for almost 30 years. On her father’s side, she is of Ngati Whatua descent and of Ngati Kahu descent on her mother’s side.

    Jeanette is blessed with a son, gifted to her by her youngest sister and it was then that her contact with Plunket started.

    Jeanette is currently employed as a Community Health Worker/ Aukati Kaipaipa (Smoking Cessation Coach) for Te Ha Oranga (Iwi Health Provider) based in Wellsford. She supports the vision to reduce the demand for tobacco and eliminate it as a normal consumer product by 2020.

    She enjoys being amongst whānau and friends and thoroughly enjoys watching and supporting her son playing sports.

  • Elizabeth Mitchelson

    Tamaki Makauru

    Involved with Plunket for many years, Elizabeth has served on the Māori Caucus since 2004.

    Elizabeth has a background in health/education and whanau, hapu and iwi involvement. She is currently a Lecturer (Nursing) at Unitec NZ Te Whare Waananga o Wairaka.

    She also serves on the ADHB Maori Advisory Committee and the Massey University Human Ethics Committee, as well as being a member of the Te Runanga o Ngati Whatua Trust, the Papakainga Whanau Trust, two Whānau Trustee Committees, and chair of the Orakei Community Health Services Board of Directors.

    Maata was born in Ngaruawahia, and together with her whānau, lived at Turangawaewae Marae. Maata was married on Turangawaewae Marae and has four children, who were also married on Turangawaewae, and seven mokopuna.

    Maata has worked as a Kaiāwhina in later years of her career, bringing to Plunket a wealth of experience specifically being involved with Māori SUDI.

    Maata currently works at Waikato hospital supporting young mothers and babies.

  • Petrina Marsh

    Waiariki

    Petrina lives in Rotorua and has been involved with Plunket since the birth of her son in 1975.

    She has 4 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
