Maata was born in Ngaruawahia, and together with her whānau, lived at Turangawaewae Marae. Maata was married on Turangawaewae Marae and has four children, who were also married on Turangawaewae, and seven mokopuna.

Maata has worked as a Kaiāwhina in later years of her career, bringing to Plunket a wealth of experience specifically being involved with Māori SUDI.

Maata currently works at Waikato hospital supporting young mothers and babies.
