Early Childhood Units are interactive life skills units developed by Plunket to introduce students of both sexes to the realities of providing for the needs of a young child and the responsibilities of parenting.
As well as providing opportunities for practical experience, it is an anticipatory guidance programme.
Our units seek to reinforce the responsibilities of parenthood and the value of parenting as an important human relationship.
Plunket has long believed in the importance of delivering parenting education to ‘latent’ parents in a way that replaces the romantic images of parenthood with a more realistic understanding of the responsibilities and challenges that being a parent entails.
The emphasis of our units is on the practical application of the skills and knowledge required to provide for young children’s basic needs.
Volunteer parents and their children from the local community attend some sessions to provide students with the opportunity for first hand interaction with the parents and a hands-on experience with young children. The parenting styles and practices of the different cultural and ethnic groups in the school are included and affirmed during course delivery.
Plunket is able to offer you a range of Early Childhood / Health Curriculum based units which can be incorporated or run back to back to create a comprehensive course.
Our most widely known course Unit 10021 Tots & Toddlers was piloted by Plunket in 1989 and released into schools in 1990.
The course has undergone rapid growth in recent years with delivery to more than 250 participating secondary schools nationally, many of which have made the course compulsory.
