A baby may go quickly from happy and well to showing the symptoms of illness.

If you are unsure about whether your child is sick or not, it is far better to be safe and take them to your doctor or hospital.

• Ask your doctor how long it should take for your child to get better.
• Ask your doctor what the signs are that your child is getting sicker and when you need to see the doctor again.
• If there is no improvement or your child seems worse, see the doctor again.
• If you cannot find a doctor, take your baby to the hospital.

Remember:

• if you need help urgently, dial 111 for ambulance service
• your Well Child/Tamariki Ora health book has a helpful section on care for the unwell baby/child including first aid and CPR
• CPR classes may be available in your community - ask your Plunket staff for information on these
• teething does not make your child sick.
