Child safety
Each year in New Zealand, 13,000 children under five years old are hospitalised because of injuries and poisoning. Many of these admissions are avoidable. This safety section has some ideas on keeping your child safe as they grow and develop.
Keep kids safe in cars
Each year in New Zealand many children die or are seriously injured in car crashes when they are not buckled up in a child restraint.
Keep your child safe
Children can easily be hurt or hurt themselves if left alone in a car. They can also be hurt getting out of the car.
Help keep your child safe
• Take your child with you when you leave the car, even if you are only going to be away for a few minutes.
• Don't leave lighters, matches, medicines or keys in the car and remove the car cigarette lighter.
• Use the child safety locks on car doors if they are fitted.
• Teach your child to get in and out of the car on the footpath side.
• ALWAYS have your child properly restrained in their car seat
