Plunket is asking the Government to consider further incremental increases in paid parental leave in future Budgets following today’s application of the financial veto to Labour MP Sue Moroney's private member's bill. The Parental Leave and Employment Protection (Six Months' Paid Leave) Amendment Bill was introduced to Parliament in April, seeking to extend paid leave from 18 weeks to 26 weeks. The Government recently increased the entitlement from 16 weeks to 18 weeks, and Plunket encourages continued increases as future Budget conditions allow, Acting Chief Executive Amanda Malu says.
Plunket welcomes the Wellington City Council’s announcement today, committing to becoming accredited as a UNICEF Child Friendly City. Wellington is the second New Zealand city to commit to the initiative, with Whangerei first to sign up in 2014. Stephanie Shennan, Plunket’s General Manager Community Development and Volunteers, described Child Friendly Cities as a great way to develop the safe, vibrant and green neighbourhoods that support children to make a healthy start.
This Father’s Day (Sunday 7 September), Plunket is celebrating all New Zealand dads who help give their kids a good start in life, year-round. “Nearly 60,000 babies were born in New Zealand in 2013, and we can confirm that not one parent reported their newborn arrived with an instruction manual!” said Liam O’Sullivan, Plunket Community Services Leader in Southland. “Many dads are finding their own way to bond with their kids and be great dads.
It’s an interesting time for the paid parental leave lobby group, 26 for Babies coalition. On 19 September the draft law aiming for 26 weeks’ paid parental leave will be back in the hands of our politicians. Plunket recommends 26 weeks’ paid parental leave to give New Zealand children the best start in life.

This weekend our wonderful Principal Sponsor, BNZ, will be subbing off their logo on four Investec Super Rugby shirts for the Plunket logo. The logo swap will take place for the two local matches between the Crusaders and the Hurricanes in Christchurch on July 12, and again for the Blues v Chiefs match at Eden Park on July 13. We wanted to celebrate this by rewarding a great dad and celebrating the important role father's play in the lives of their children.
