Following today’s announcement that New Zealand’s coronavirus alert level will be raised to level 3 and in 48 hours raised to level 4, I wanted to provide an update on Whānau Āwhina Plunket’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and what we are doing to protect you and your whānau during this worrying time.

Suspending our face-to-face services
We have had to make some difficult decisions including suspending all face-to-face contact. This includes closing all clinics, toy libraries and stopping the delivery of playgroups and parenting groups until further notice.

A lot of our services rely on this face to face contact, but we know we need to play our part to reduce the risk to New Zealand whānau and tamariki. We’re currently working hard to find alternative ways of delivering our services to ensure everyone has access to support when they need it, and to make sure no one feels isolated during this time.

What does this mean for you?
If you have a clinic or home If you have a clinic or home visit scheduled, your Plunket nurse or Kaiāwhina/Health Worker will be in touch. Our nurses have lots of people to speak to, so if you don’t hear from your nurse in the next few days, please send them a text or give them a call.

Suspending all face to face contact will also mean we are temporarily stopping all antenatal, Maternal Mental Health and other specialist services such as Parenting Through Separation.

While the situation in New Zealand evolves, I want to reassure you all our local teams are there for you, so please don’t hesitate to give your Plunket nurse a call or a text if you need support. We also have our friendly

Healthline has a dedicated COVID-19 number 0800 358 5453, which you should call:

  • to register if you have self-isolated yourself
  • for any coronavirus health advice and information and
  • if you have questions about coronavirus, self-isolation etc.

People calling that line will be able to talk with a member of the National Telehealth Service. They have access to interpreters.
