PlunketLine breastfeeding support via video conferencing

In November last year, Plunket launched a new digital service to help mothers needing extra support to breastfeed their babies.

Mothers referred to the service receive one-on-one support from Plunket Nurses trained as certified lactation consultants*, or fully trained breastfeeding specialists via video conferencing using Zoom software.

Available through PlunketLine, Plunket’s 24/7 free parent helpline, this new video conferencing service allows Plunket to work directly with mothers who have been referred and provide advice as they are feeding.

Funded through a significant donation from the Wright Family Foundation, the service has received positive feedback from both the mothers and the nurses. With 98% of mothers saying they received enough information to continue breastfeeding.

Who is the service for?

The video conferencing (VC) breastfeeding support service is focused on supporting mothers and families who find that accessing local lactation services is difficult due to their location or where demand for support is high.

The service is also working to provide additional support for Māori and Pacific whānau.

PlunketLine is keen to work with organisations and groups seeking to provide additional support for breastfeeding mothers.

How can GPs or other health professionals refer clients to the service?

Any GP, Lactation Consultant, Lead Maternity Carer or health professional can contact PlunketLine regarding a referral for a breastfeeding client. The referral will enable an additional contact or series of contacts with the client to provide support with a breastfeeding issue.

Any referral should be discussed and agreed with the client prior to contacting PlunketLine, along with the completion of the form below. This will form part of the plan of care that directly relates to assessed need.

What happens once they are referred?

PlunketLine will work alongside the mother and family, and the health professional to ensure a plan of care is effectively coordinated to facilitate the best outcome for mother and baby.
