Listeria has been found in a supermarket salad. All LeaderBrand salads have now been recalled, despite the food-borne bacteria being found only in the Caesar Salad. The company said it has recalled its entire salad product range, including LeaderBrand Classic Salads, Fresh Plus Salads, Value Bag Salads, Pam's Fresh Express salads and 100 per cent Fresh Salads from the major supermarkets it supplies.
More than 120 team members from The Warehouse and Plunket will embark on a cycle relay the length of New Zealand in March to raise funds for Plunket community services. Pedal for Plunket, now in its second year, kicks off in in both Cape Reinga and Port Puponga on 8th March 2017. Riders will cycle various legs of the race through the North and South Islands in unison, calling in to 88 of The Warehouse’s 92 stores along the way.
Today marks the start of Well Child Week (27 February-4 March 2017), something close to the heart of Plunket and the Kiwi families we serve.
The focus of this year’s Well Child Week is the crucial 15-18 month visit where Plunket and families are able to take the time to discuss how their child is developing. Plunket Nurses aim to meet with children and their families at least seven times before they are five years old through the Well Child/Tamariki Ora programme.

Huggies, Wattie’s, Dettol and Colgate rallied together to provide much needed supplies of nappies, baby food, and cleaning products (including hand sanitizer and wipes, and tooth paste and brushes) for quake affected families in Kaikoura and North Canterbury. Pregnancy & Parenting Manager Linda Hill led the coordination and distribution of these support packs (‘Hugs in a Bag’) alongside her Plunket Canterbury staff and volunteers.
Plunket has today launched an interview series that reveals the challenges and rewards of life as a Plunket nurse. The Making a Difference series is a feature of Plunket’s 1000 Days to Raise a Bundle fundraising campaign, which aims to promote awareness around the vital role that the charity plays in the first 1000 days of a child’s life. “The best research shows that what happens to a child in their first 1000 days will influence their entire life,” Plunket Chief Executive Amanda Malu says.
As the work year ends and the holidays begin, Plunket is offering parents and caregivers some practical tips for keeping safe this summer. “All children deserve the best protection they can get, and mums and dads deserve a relaxing break,” says Plunket National Advisor Child Safety Sue Campbell. “When planning ahead for summer fun, include ways of protecting children from unsafe situations.

Today is International Volunteer Day and Plunket is paying tribute to the thousands of its volunteers around New Zealand who support the charity. International Volunteer Day is a United Nations-led initiative that celebrates the one billion-strong volunteer workforce around the world. The theme for 2016 is “Together we can”, which the organisation says emphasises the power of community and that by working together, we can achieve great things.
It’s natural for new parents to want to keep their babies close after the recent earthquakes but Plunket is advising families to continue following safe sleep practices. Plunket’s National Advisor for Māori Health Zoe Tipa says for parents who choose to bring their babies into their bed, the use of sturdy plastic pepipods and flax wahakura are a safer option. “But unless you have one of these, our advice is to follow the usual practice of keeping your baby in their own bed, making sure they are sleeping face up and face clear, and ensuring the house is smoke free.
Plunket’s vision is that ‘In the first 1000 days, we make the difference of a lifetime’. In an historic vote at its National AGM today, Plunket agreed that the best way to achieve that vision is to move away from its current Area Society structure and transition into a more modern and relevant national charitable trust. A single, cohesive national organisation will make it easier for Plunket to deliver fairer outcomes for its families and children with a focus on areas that need it most, Acting New Zealand President Christine Lake says.
