It was a full day of connection and care as whānau, pēpi and kaimahi came through the doors at the new Whānau Āwhina Plunket immunisation site in Ōtautahi Christchurch. Plunket Nurse and now vaccinator Linda Stocker was ready to go, supported by Clinical Leader Nicki Powell and Immunisation Service Manager Bernadette Heaphy, at the first clinic day on Tuesday, 14 October.
First up was four-year-old Theo, who came in for his 4-year immunisations and a catch-up meningococcal B vaccine. Theo was curious and brave, helped along by Bernadette’s bubble-blowing distraction.
Next was baby Aric, who brought his mum, dad and big brother for his 3-month immunisations. While Aric shed a few tears, his brother was quick to point out he could cry much louder! Mum and Dad told us how easy it was to come along after their Plunket Nurse, Priya Devi, offered the service and booked them in. They’ve already asked to return for Aric’s next round, a huge compliment to the team and a testament to how accessible and reassuring the experience felt.
The day also saw three of our own kaimahi leading by example. Regional Operations Manager Maria Van Der Plas, Clinical Services Manager Suzanne Johnston, and kaiāwhina Chris Haywood all rolled up their sleeves for their MMR vaccinations, doing their part to protect themselves and our pēpi and tamariki.
The launch was made possible through incredible teamwork. The Christchurch team says the collaboration has been smooth and grounded in the shared purpose of improving access to immunisation for whānau across Canterbury.
The Christchurch launch marks another important milestone in Plunket’s immunisation project with Health New Zealand. Together, we’re reducing barriers, providing whānau with more choice, and helping to protect our communities for generations to come.
