Vishva Shukla has been named Volunteer of the Year 2026, as part of the Northern region’s celebrations for National Volunteer week.
As the parent facilitator of the Ellen Melville Baby/Toddler Group since April 2025, Vishva has created an environment where families feel welcomed, safe, respected and included. The group is made up largely of migrant families and, as a migrant herself, Vishva knows firsthand their experiences, needs and challenges. Her warmth, kindness, and compassion are evident in every interaction she has with the parents and children who attend the group.
In her nomination for Vishva, Community Services Coordinator Justyna Szerek noted that Vishva consistently goes above and beyond in her volunteer role. “She is a strong advocate for the families within the group and works hard to ensure their voices are heard and their needs are met,” says Sarah. “Her contribution has enriched the experience of many whānau and strengthened connections within our community.”
Thank you, Vishva, for your commitment to supporting whānau.
