Cost-saving ideas

There are many great ways to save money while raising a family. On top of budgeting and managing your finances, why don’t you consider these cost-saving ideas.

Buy second-hand items

Sharing and swapping with friends and family, or buying second-hand, can be a great way to save money. Take a look at Trade Me and our guide to second-hand baby equipment to see our helpful safety tips to make sure you are purchasing the correct item for your child.

Make stuff at home

Gardening and cooking are two great home activities that can save money. The Great Little Cookbook, published by the Ministry of Social Development, is full of money-saving advice on healthy eating and cooking for children.  This can be downloaded from the Work and Income website.

Making the most of free and low-cost activities

Think of fun things you can do that are free or low-cost, like visits to the local playground, and picnics with friends and family at a park.

Often communities also have sharing services, such as toy libraries, libraries, and social groups. Use our Plunket Near You tool to find out what’s near you.
