Whāngai

Whāngai is the Māori tradition of someone other than the birth parents raising tamariki. Typically, this is a relative, either their whānau or extended family. This arrangement is informal and can be short-term, long-term or permanent.

A whāngai placement is coordinated directly between the birth parents and the mātua whāngai (the family who will raise the child).
