Plunket playgroups around New Zealand are being encouraged to get involved with the Sending Love for Christmas initiative this year.
Sending Love is a nationwide project that collects Christmas cards written by everyday Kiwis and distributes them to people who might be feeling lonely or just need a bit of extra love and care during the festive season. The project was started in 2017 by mum Hannah Rodgers and her 5-year-old son Jayden Devin-Rodgers.
Last year Ashleigh Young, Community Services Coordinator of Plunket in Whangarei, was involved in the project with her young son and his playgroup: “My son’s playgroup hand-delivered cards to several rest homes here in Whangarei and this was absolutely priceless and meant a great deal to everyone involved."
Plunket’s Northern Region Operations Manager Sam Ferreira says, “The Sending Love project helps to connect people in communities and this is something Plunket also aims to do – we work to make sure no whānau or family is left isolated or disconnected. Seeing the amazing impact of the tamariki's giving on the rest home residents, Ashleigh thought it would be great if Plunket got involved in the project, and we agree. This year we are excited to put the idea to our people and encourage Plunket playgroups around Aotearoa to take part.”
Co-founder of Sending Love, Hannah Rodgers, says she is delighted that Plunket is keen to participate. “Plunket has playgroups in many communities and their involvement will help us reach more people with messages of kindness and care”, says Hannah.
Plunket will work with local Sending Love coordinators around the country to arrange for the drop-off and, where possible, hand-delivery of the cards by Plunket playgroup tamariki. Cards will be delivered one or two weeks before Christmas.
Sending Love has drop-boxes in about 80 communities throughout New Zealand.
The public can take part by writing a message in a card – making sure it’s full of love – and dropping it into their nearest drop box, or by sending it to PO Box 90-701, Victoria Street West, Auckland 1142.
Drop box locations and additional information can be found at Sending Love’s website.
