Connecting & communicating

Crying is one of baby’s ways of communicating.

Young babies need a lot of love and physical contact from caring adults as this helps them feel loved, safe and able to rely on their parents. It is often a challenge to settle a crying baby.

You may find your baby's crying more distressing if you are stressed, tired or busy. If you feel the crying is getting too much for you, put your baby in a safe place (eg cot) and take a few minutes to calm yourself down, then go back to check on your baby.

You may like to ring a friend or Plunket staff to talk about how you are feeling.
