Coping with change

Coping with change

  • Baby number two on the way? Include your child in preparing for the new baby and talk with them lots about what’s happening. They can help with small things like getting the cot ready.
  • Moving from a cot to a bed can be big for a child. Support them by keeping any comforting routines in place, and move any favorite blankets or toys to the bed with them.
  • Jealousy and fighting between siblings? Try giving your children some individual attention so they don’t feel they have to compete. Be even with praise. SKIP have some great strategies for dealing with jealousy and fighting.
  • Moving? Involve your children in the move, talk with them about it and reassure them that all of their familiar things will be coming with them. There are lots of books you can read with your child that might help.
  • Dealing with a relationship separation? Tell them it is not their fault, and reassure them that you both still love them and that won't change.
